Cheap anti-cavalry infantry. The answer to Knights, Scout rushes, and Battle Elephants when you have numbers.

Idle Villager is current for Update 177723, with minor updates through 180059. Facts on this page were checked on 2026-09-19. Counters are not unconditional. Numbers, upgrades, terrain, and micro change the fight.

What it does

Keep a few around whenever the opponent has stables. Upgrade when the Knight fight is the game. Pair them with Skirmishers or Scorpions so archers cannot snipe the pack.

Strengths

  • Low cost. No gold.
  • Bonus damage vs cavalry and elephants.
  • Easy to add from extra Barracks when you see Knights.

Weaknesses

  • Low pierce armor. Archers and Scorpions farm them.
  • Slow attack. They need to surround.
  • Lose to Champions and other infantry in equal numbers.

Strong counters

Strategic advice built on verified armor classes and unit access. Not unconditional.

  • Archer · cost-effective · can win in equal numbers

Archers are the clean answer. Pikes do not catch them.

    • Skirmishers in front of the pikes.
    • Scorpions do the same job even harder in Castle Age.
  • Scorpion · cost-effective · needs numbers, surround, or micro

Bolts farm pike blobs. This is why Khmer Scorpions pair with elephants.

    • Knights diving the Scorpions.
    • Onagers.

Situational counters

  • Mangonel · cost-effective · needs numbers, surround, or micro

Blast vs a pike clump. Overkill if you already have archers.

    • Friendly fire if Knights are mixed.

What it counters

  • Ballista Elephant

Halberdiers are the cost-effective wall. Equal numbers of Ballista Elephants beat a small pike group. A large pike group wins the money fight.

  • Knight

Pikes are the textbook cost-effective answer. Five pikes do not stop twenty Knights. A comparable resource pile of pikes does.

  • Battle Elephant

Halberdiers are the cost-effective wall. Equal numbers of elephants win. The money fight does not.

  • Scout Cavalry

Spears win the Feudal Scout fight if they are out in time.

  • Camel Rider

Pikes beat camels on cost. Knights lose to camels. Know which fight you are in.

Why matchups work

The spear line carries hidden bonus damage vs the mounted and elephant armor classes. That bonus, not the displayed 3 attack, is why a cheap unit trades with a 60 food 75 gold Knight. Ranged units ignore that bonus and hit low pierce armor.

    Movement speed. Khmer lack this.

Common mistakes when fighting it

  • Making only spears when the opponent went archers.
  • Forgetting the Halberdier upgrade in Imperial Age.
  • Fighting Knights in a choke where you cannot surround.

Supporting units

Civilization-specific exceptions

These sit on top of the generic matchup, not inside it.

  • Byzantines

    Spearman line costs 25% less.

    verified fact

  • Mongols

No Halberdier. Pikeman is the last upgrade.

    verified fact

  • Khmer

Have Halberdier but lack Squires and Plate Mail Armor, so the line stays slow and thin.
